The Fellowship of the Ring

by J.R.R. Tolkien

Review by Nathan K.

1. What is this book about? (who are the characters? When and where does it take place?)
This book is about a company of nine creatures who set out on a quest across a land called Middle Earth. Their goal is to destroy the One Ring, an evil and powerful ring created by the Dark Lord Sauron. The company is made up of four hobbits named Frodo Baggins, who is the Ring-bearer, Samwise Gamgee, Meriadoc Brandybuck, and Peregrin Took. Joining them is an old yet wise and powerful wizard named Gandalf the Grey, a dwarf named Gimli, an elf-prince named Legolas, and two strong men named Boromir and Aragorn. In order to destroy the ring, the company must reach Mordor and Frodo must cast it into the fiery depths of Mount Doom where it was originally created. It is a long and treacherous journey to get from the hobbits’ cozy land called The Shire to the perilous land of Mordor, home of the Enemy.

2. Did you enjoy reading the book? If so, what did you like about it? If not, what didn’t you like
about it?
I personally loved reading this book. The characters are all unique and interesting, and the words Tolkien uses come together perfectly to create a beautiful and vivid picture in the reader’s mind.

3. Was your favorite character the protagonist or antagonist? Why?
My favorite character is one of the protagonists, Gandalf the Grey. He is the wise and powerful wizard who helps guide the company of their journey. He is my favorite character because he is very humble and cares for everyone deeply and sincerely.

4. Did you relate to the story or any character? How did you relate?
I can relate to Aragorn because he is very intelligent and strong-willed. He is brave and always keeps the best in mind for his companions.

5. Would you recommend this book to someone else? Why would you tell them they should or
should not read it?
I would definitely recommend this book to others. I would recommend it because it keeps you on your toes and pulls you into another magical world with every page that you read.

6. Did you like the cover? If you redesigned the cover, what would it look like?
I did like the cover, which was a painting of the elvish town called Rivendell, which the company passes through in the book. If I could change the cover I would add the company walking down a path leading out of Rivendell, to give the readers a visual of what the characters look like.
