Drawing From Memory
By Allen Saw
Review by Chris M.

1. What is this book about? (who are the characters? When and where does it take place?) The book is about a child named Sei in Japan (Nihon) that from a young age starts to draw. At 13 years old he hears about a 15 year old kid named Tokida who at also wants to be a cartoonist that runs from home. He walked from Osaka to Tokyo (350 miles). His story hit the news the next day and Noro Shinpei came in the newsroom and told him that he would teach him. Sei read this in the newspaper and went to find Noro. He asks to be taught by Noro. Noro becomes his Sensei.
2. Did you enjoy reading the book? If so, what did you like about it? If not, what didn’t you like
about it? I did enjoy reading the book. I like things that are about Japan, they interest me. I have always been a big fan of anime and manga, and a story relating to the history of Japanese comics is something that really sparks interest in me.
3. Was your favorite character the protagonist or antagonist? Why? I liked the main protagonist, Sei. He is a very good artist and a kind person. I feel as if I have learned a thing or two from him.
4. Did you relate to the story or any character? How did you relate? I can relate to Sei because he has a lot of ambition and he strives to do what he yearns to do in life.
5. Would you recommend this book to someone else? Why would you tell them they should or
should not read it? Yes, in fact, I would. I feel as if I have learned something from it, and I also feel that others can also learn something from it.
6. What was your favorite quote and why did you like that quote? My Favorite quote is “let your dear child journey”. This is how I would raise children if I ever have any.
