Divergent

by Veronica Roth

Review by Chase R.

1. What is this book about?
The book is about a 16 year old girl named Beatrice. In the story there are five factions, Erudite, Abnegation, Condor, Amity, and Dauntless. Beatrice belongs to Abnegation. Abnegation is based off being selfless and putting others before yourself. She has a really hard time putting others before herself and, doesn’t feel she belongs in her faction. When every teen turns sixteen years old the get to choose their new faction or stay in the one they were born into. Before they are allowed to choose, they have to take something called an Aptitude test. It is supposed to tell you what faction you would best fit in. Beatrice takes the test and her test back inconclusive, which means she is a divergent. She decides to go with Dauntless. the faction centered on bravery and strength, also used to protect the cities border. The Dauntless have to undergo intensive test to prove strength in both physical and mental challenges. She started at the end of the pack toward the bottom but one of the instructors takes a liking to her. Four, the instructor, helps her gain extra knowledge about ways to fight and ways to stay mentally strong. She moved up leader boards after winning a fight against a higher ranked initiate. Then the mental challenges started with taking her worst fears and running them through a simulation. The object of the simulations is to get through all of your fears in as little time as possible. Tris finds out quickly that because she is a divergent she can manipulate the system. Being a divergent is very dangerous and she has to hide it, because the government sees divergents as a threat. Once training is over, they inject everyone with a new serum. When Tris wakes the next morning she doesn’t know why everyone is walking around like zombies with no expression at all. She tries talking with one of her friends but gets no reply. She falls in line the best she can with the others and sees that the dauntless leaders are all awake and watching the mindless others. One of the soldiers is awake walking around asking what is going on, he is a divergent they shot him on the spot. She has to put a stop to this because Erudite is using the soldiers to go after her old faction and exterminate them. It’s a very exciting thrilling fight to save her family and friends with unbelievable trials.

2. Did you enjoy reading the book?

Yes, it was non-stop action at every turn and I didn’t want to put it down.

3. What was your favorite part or your favorite character?  Why?

I liked Four or Tobias because he only had four fears and because he is strong and the best at what he does but doesn’t want any power.

4. Did you relate to the story or any character?  How?
I found it easy to relate with Tris because she started out weak and a nobody but got stronger as she learned and grew from her experiences.

5. Would you recommend this book to someone else?
Yes, I highly recommend the book because anytime I thought I was about to get to a boring section it picked up again. I found it very hard to want to put the book down.
6.  Did you like the way it ended?

I liked the way it ended because it left a perfect thrilling feeling, but also made a great opening to transition to the next book.
