The Maze Runner

by James Dashner

Review by Weston C.

The Maze Runner is an exciting thriller, full of suspense and action that anyone can enjoy. The book takes place in a larger than life maze where boys and young men are sent to live; they are supplied with some food, water, shelter, and other necessities monthly. Those who are sent there have created their own society with an organized labor force and laws. Groups within this society are designated to specific tasks among them are called runners; runners search through the maze to try to solve the maze and find an escape for their people. The catch is that at night all the door to the maze around the settlement shut to protect them from grievers. Grievers are mechanized creatures that can infect you or kill you with one of its many blades that protrude from its skin.

In the settlement called the Glade, newcomers or “greenies” arrive monthly. Thomas is the newcomer and is shown the ropes. The day after Thomas arrives, a girl arrives; in a society of young men this is unheard of and causes uproar throughout the community. The girl is in a coma but comes with a note reading “this is the end”.

The main characters Newt, Thomas, Minho, the leader of the runners, and Teresa, the girl, struggle to solve the maze and make an escape. When they escape along with some of the other Gladers they find themselves in a lab being studied. This is how book one of The Maze Runner series ends.

The book was a very exciting with twists and turns that will keep you on your toes during the whole trek. I feel that James Dashner did a fantastic job creating characters for this book meticulously crafting an array of personalities that help to create drama and draw the reader into the book. Personally my favorite character is Minho; Minho has a no bull crap, strong, sarcastic personality that I enjoyed and adds a lot of grit to the story. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone that has a love for action packed

thrillers.

I enjoyed the end of book one in the series it ends abruptly that makes you want to pick up the next book in the series. Book one ends in a way that book two can pick right up where book one left off, this makes the series feel like one big book.

In conclusion my overall opinion of The Maze Runner is five out of five, for being a suspenseful, dramatic, action filled thriller. The characters were brilliantly put together to for a book you just did not want to put down.
