The School - The Students

Approximately 1,000 individuals are held at the OJC.  We believe that about 50 of them are eligible to attend school daily.  The eligible students primarily are teens and young adults up to 21 years old who will  be held at the OJC for more than three days. Nearly all the students have faced school failure--many did not attend school regularly when they were younger, most have been suspended or expelled at some point, nearly all of them are far behind their peers academically, and 30-40% of them have special education needs. They all, though, have hopes and dreams, skills and talents, and family and friends who care for them.

At the school, our mission will be to provide each student we serve with the best educational experience of his or her life, to ensure that each is successful at our school and finds a reason to be excited about learning, and to prepare each student to succeed at school no matter where they end up upon release from the jail.

Working at the OJC School will afford adults the opportunity to work with teens and young adults from greater New Orleans when they need you the most. This is a unique chance for individuals who are passionate about social justice and want to put their skills to work on behalf of New Orleans’ most vulnerable and at-risk teens and young adults. We are looking for professionals who are committed to bringing their passion, skills, and experience directly to students held at the OJC. We are looking for staff who are determined and resolved--who will go to great lengths to ensure that students who are held at the OJC get the best education of their lives, who believe that all students can succeed given the right supports and encouragement, and who are willing to take on difficult challenges each and every day on behalf of the students they serve.
