OUR School

In August 2016, The Center for Educational Excellence in Alternative Settings (CEEAS), opened a new school inside of the Youth Study Center (YSC), the New Orleans juvenile detention center.  CEEAS runs this school in partnership with the Orleans Parish School Board (OPSB).  As a team, our school staff elected to name the school the Travis Hill School, and we welcomed our first students on August 22, 2016.

At the Travis Hill School, our mission is to provide each student we serve with the best educational experience of his or her life, to ensure that each is successful at our School and finds a reason to be excited about learning, and to prepare each student to succeed at school when they return home.

Our name

Our school is named after New Orleans native and musician, Travis "Trumpet Black" Hill.  Travis had musical greatness in his genes, coming from a family dynasty of musicians, but he overcame great barriers to become one of our city’s young musical stars.  As a teenager, Travis became involved in the justice system and spent almost nine years locked up.  He used his time behind bars to study and read, and upon his release picked up his trumpet again.  With steadfast commitment, Travis worked hard to build his music career and earned his way to playing with some of the most premier music groups in New Orleans.  In his spare time, Travis volunteered with youth organizations, playing benefit concerts and working directly with youth.  While his life ended prematurely, we feel his brief time created an inspiring legacy from which our students can learn: of overcoming obstacles, of determination, of service, and of hope.
